Print Ads

The following are print advertisements that I created in a final project portfolio for an upper-level advertising class at Bradley University. I have included additional information about each ad assignment so you can better understand the context in which it was made.

Picture Window Ad

Parameters of the assignment:

The parameters of this assignment were to create an ad for a publication that I am not the target for. More specifically, the audience and placement needed to be in a publication that is the opposite of what I consider to be my personal target market. Since I am a guy, I decided to make an ad for lipstick that can be placed in Cosmopolitan Magazine. The ad really needed to speak to my opposite definite audience.

How and where:

I made this ad using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. I chose Katy Perry as a celebrity model for the lipstick because I felt Cosmopolitan readers could identify with her well. Her cherry decorated dress adds even more to the ad since the lipstick color/flavor is “cherry ice.” I obtained all of the images used for this project through Google images.

What I learned:

Through this project, I learned

that through extensive research, I can learn what attracts different people to an ad. I had to do a good amount of research to see what girls liked about Cosmopolitan Magazine and what type of ad would get their attention. Since there are so many celebrity stories in the magazine, I concluded that using Katy Perry as an attention source was a great idea.

Ad in its context:

This ad would appear in a magazine that is popular with women such as Cosmopolitan.

Mondrian Ad

Parameters of the assignment:

This is the Mondrian Ad Assignment. It is the basis for all internet advertising and is a great way to understand the fundamentals. The parameters of this assignment involve using the rule of thirds in order to create an ad that demonstrates my knowledge of the genre. In this ad, I mainly used the traditional Mondrian colors (red, yellow, and blue). Our class had the choice of creating an ad featuring the following products: blueberries, peppers, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, or artichokes.

How and where:

For my Mondrian ad, I focused on advertising blueberries for Naturally Yours, Peoria’s local organic grocery store. Using the program In Design, I created this ad while emulating the Mondrian style of precise geometric form. I took the Naturally Yours logo from their website and obtained the stock image photos of blueberries from Google images.

What I learned:

I learned a lot from doing this assignment. It helped me gain an understanding of what makes an eye-catching ad; especially when it comes to image placement and design.

Ad in its context:

This ad would appear in a Naturally Yours E-newsletter or in a health digest magazine.

Story Ad

Parameters of the assignment:

This is the Autoethnographic Ad assignment AKA the “Story Ad” assignment. The parameters of this assignemnt are basically to just tell a story. I was to make a story about a memorable experience I have had with a product. The story within the ad should be able to convey what the product means to me.

How and where:

For my story ad, I used a picture from photobucket.com of a small boy and a dog who have obviously been up to no good. I photoshopped the Swiffer logo and the mop into the picture and came up with the original slogan.

What I learned:

I learned a lot from doing this project. It taught me how to incorporate my own personal experiences into my creative work. I feel like the overall impact of the ad is a lot greater when you put your own emotional ties into it.

The story behind the ad:

When my twin brother Mike and I were toddlers, we each had our hand at a fair share of destruction around the house. More often the case though, we would fuse our curiosity together as a team and create much bigger messes than we ever could have done separately. Our dog Carmen was our partner in crime every now and then as well. Situations like the one in this picture were common place in my household. Since this sort of thing happened so often, my mom would use Swiffer products to clean up the messes almost as quickly as we had created them, thus the inspiration for this advertisement.

Ad in its context:
The story behind the ad:This ad would appear in a magazine that is popular with mothers like Good Housekeeping.

Bookend Ad

Parameters of the assignment:

The parameters of this assignment involve making two separate sections of an ad that enclose a related article in a magazine. Each end of the ad acts as a “bookend” for the article. We were to create one of these ads for Prairie Queen Farms while promoting their line of affordable vegetables.

How and where:

I created this ad using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. Both pictures in the ad are from Google Images. I used an article about vegetarian foods as dummy text for the ad.

What I learned:

Through this project, I learned how to apply an untraditional type of advertisement within the context of the media it is placed in. I had to visualize how someone who picked up a magazine would interpret this ad when they were reading this story. It got me to think more along the lines of the consumer.

Ad in its context:

This ad would appear in VegNews magazine surrounding an article on vegetarian foods.

Groupon Ad

Parameters of the assignment:

The parameters of this assignment involved writing our own versions of an advertisement on Groupon.com. The ad was to promote $100 dollars off One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning’s whole house duct cleaning service.

How and where:

I made this ad using Adobe Photoshop and Indesign. I found the stock picture of One Hour Heating & Air on Google Images. A lot of research needed to be done on One Hour’s services as well as Groupon’s advertising writing style.

What I learned:

Through this project, I learned how to write an online ad in an informative, yet entertaining way by mixing in funny or playful language along with the necessary information and call to action gleaned to make the reader consider the purchase.

Ad in its context:

This ad would appear on groupon.com as an online offer for One Hour
Heating & Air Conditioning
